Start With the One That Solves a Real Problem
(How to Pick the First AI Tool That Actually Moves the Needle)
Why this matters:
The biggest mistake contractors make with AI? Starting with something that looks cool instead of something that helps. You don’t need the flashiest tool. You need the one that solves a real friction point in your day. That’s where traction starts.
Where Most People Get It Wrong
They start with AI like it’s a new toy:
“Let’s see what it can do”
“Let’s try it on something random”
“Let’s build something cool and figure out the use later”
That’s fine for tinkering. But if you're a contractor with limited time, it doesn’t work.
You don’t need to play.
You need a win.
Here’s a Better Way to Choose
Ask yourself:
Where do I lose time every day?
What’s something I hate doing but still have to do?
Where could a rough draft or quick reply help me move faster?
Then — find or test an AI tool that does just that.
For example:
Hate writing customer updates? → Use ChatGPT to draft them
Waste time updating your CRM? → Test an AI assistant or Zapier flow
Need help with job summaries? → Try prompting AI with your field notes
Solve One Real Problem. Then Stack.
Once you get a real win — even a small one — your confidence grows.
From there, you can layer in other tools. But always start from the pain point, not the novelty.
Don’t ask “What’s the best AI tool?”
Ask “What’s the dumbest, most annoying task I can offload?”
Then start there.
